How Much Does It Cost to Sail in Sydney?
It's one of the first questions people ask and one of the simplest for us to summarise . So here it is: what does it actually cost to sail in Sydney?
The answer depends entirely on how you do it. Let's break it down.
The cost of owning a boat in Sydney
Owning your own yacht gives you freedom but it comes with a price tag that catches a lot of people off guard.
Here's a rough picture of what you're looking at annually for a modest 35-40 foot sailing yacht in Sydney:
Purchase price: $300,000+ (quality second-hand; new is considerably more)
Marina berth: $1,500- $2,000 per month, or $18,000 - $24,000 per year
Insurance: $3,000 -$6,000 per year
Maintenance and servicing: $3,000 -$8,000 per year (can be significantly more)
Haul out and antifouling: $5,000 - $6000 per year
Registration and safety equipment: $1000 - $1,500 per year
Before you've untied the ropes, you're looking at $35,000- $45,000 per year in ongoing costs on top of whatever you paid for the boat. And that's assuming nothing major needs replacing.
For many people, the boat spends more time at the marina than it does on the water. It becomes an expensive item to own rather than a pleasure to enjoy.
The cost of chartering in Sydney
Day charters on Sydney Harbour typically run from $600 to $2000 + for a sailing yacht, depending on size and whether you need a skipper. Weekly bareboat charters can run to $4000- $7500.
If you want to sail a few times a month, charter costs add up quickly without giving you any continuity, community, or familiarity with a particular boat.
The cost of a yacht syndicate
Syndicates let you buy a share of a boat and split the ongoing costs. In Sydney, syndicate shares typically range from $45,000 to $120,000, depending on the vessel and number of owners.
On top of your purchase price, you'll contribute to shared marina fees, insurance, maintenance, and repairs. The ongoing monthly cost varies, but members commonly pay $850- $1,400+ per month in shared running costs.
You do own a piece of a boat, but that means you're also responsible for a piece of the cost of rectifying anything that goes wrong with it. And during your period of ownership, typically 4 - 5 years, your equity is locked in and to opt out before the end date of the syndicate you need to find a buyer for your share.
The cost of a SailTime sailing membership
SailTime Australia is an equity-free sailing membership, which means no boat to buy, no share to purchase, no maintenance to worry about.
You pay a one-off life time joining fee - Silver membership is $1300 and Gold, $1800 which includes two days of induction training on your boat, and thereafter, just a monthly membership fee.
At SailTime Australia, memberships start from $790 per month for Silver membership at our Port Stephens base, through to $$1280 per for a Gold membership at Rushcutters Bay. You can see full sailing membership details here.
That's the full cost. The fleet is professionally maintained, fully insured, and ready to sail. You book online, you show up, you go sailing.
To put it plainly - a SailTime membership costs less per month than a marina berth alone and you don't need to spend $100,000+ to get started!
What are you getting for that membership fee?
When you compare options, it's worth thinking about what you're actually paying for:

The real question: how often will you actually sail?
One of the most honest things we can say is this: whatever option you choose, it only makes sense if you actually use it.
A SailTime membership is designed for people who genuinely want to sail regularly, not occasionally. Members have guaranteed sail times each month, access to the community calendar (twilight racing, regattas, social events), and a boat they know well.
If you're the kind of person who's been saying "I'd love to sail more" with my family and friends and have previously been put off by the cost then perhaps a SailTime membership is the perfect solution.
